Finally, the presto ed scherzando finale is unique in the whole of Haydn. Its upbeat phrase consists of just two measures. Repeated several times throughout the movement, it speeds up like a horse, only to stop abruptly as if before a tall fence. Its effect is absolutely intoxicating. Throughout this quartet, Haydn is being contrary and the results are savory indeed.

Here, in my opinion, we are seeing a Rare interpretation.... Haydn's "few notes", with its geometric structures, are Clear, Balanced, and really full of Beauty and Pathos....all visible in the ecstasy of Mr. Brendel's facial expressions.... Pure Art ✨

The Haydn 81st is one of my favorite symphonies. It has enormous energy and wonderful charm. This Hogwood recording is outstanding although the short lived by Antal Dorati recording, originally on Mercury, is still the best. It is available for download but it is hard to find.
This sonata really sucks. I do not know how Haydn could write such a thing. There is no contrast, all the topics are almost the same, one solid mud.
A comment that neatly demonstrates that an opinion is a judgement not necessarily based on knowledge and understanding. Everyone is entitled to an opinion however ill-informed, but in this case, your comment is simply wrong; if you don’t like the sonata - just say so.

Very harpsichordian (clearly cut and articulated), Haydn recalling Scarlatti influence, while at the same time presaging the great gestures and exploration of Beethoven. Schiff's performance is neat, amazingly balanced and well-voiced. Given that this is Haydn's last piano sonata (and he never saw fit to write another), however, I prefer to go at it all guns blazing. We're not going to get another, and Haydn deserves to be remembered as more than a 'linking' composer - father of the sonata, symphony and string quartet.
